THE BRIEF
Wychavon District Council and Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre commissioned us to create a Droitwich Spa heritage animation exploring the town’s long and fascinating relationship with salt.
The two-minute film needed to explain how centuries of salt production shaped Droitwich Spa, from its medieval brine wells and the industrial development of salt production to Tower Hill’s continuing role today.
The animation was created for visitors to Tower Hill Brine Pump, where it now plays on an on-site digital screen.
It forms part of wider work to celebrate the town’s distinctive heritage, enhance the visitor experience and encourage more people to explore Droitwich Spa.
WHAT WE DID
We started the project by developing a selection of style frames to establish the look and feel of the animation.
Once the style was approved, we developed the full script and storyboard, mapping out how the story would unfold.
We chose a mixed-media collage style to tell the story of Droitwich Spa’s salt heritage. We felt this was one of the most effective ways to approach a historical subject, particularly as there was limited footage and photography available of the subject matter.
Our animator Emily used cut-outs from the available archive imagery, including Droitwich’s distinctive wonky buildings and the Royal Brine Baths, and animated them to add movement and character to the story. She combined these with stock imagery and visual elements to illustrate processes that would be difficult to capture on film, such as extracting brine from the town’s wells.
A textured paper finish helped create a classic, handcrafted look. The collage style also made it easy to incorporate Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre’s branding and colours throughout.
The finished Droitwich Spa heritage animation is now available to watch on-site at Tower Hill.
